Snorkels are breathing apparatus used by swimmers and skin divers. It consists of a long tube held in the mouth. The tube is usually ‘J shaped and fitted with a mouthpiece and usually made up of rubber or plastic. This is useful for the inhalation of air from above the water surface, when the mouth and nose are submerged in the water, after SCUBA diving. The simplest type of snorkel is the one which gets flooded, underwater. By a sharp exhalation, the water is removed. The modern type consists of a sump in the mouthpiece but prevents the inhalation of water. |
